Hi everyone --

I'm still hoping to book Laura Antoniou in two weeks, and will send out a special note about her workshops. Probable dates 1/15 and 16.

We're VERY excited about the upcoming weekend with Dossie Eastoon and Barbara Carrellas, Transformative Tantra: Transgressive, Transcendent, and Transgender -- for people of every gender and orientation, but especially for those who have felt alienated by the focus of many traditional tantra classes that make you feel too queer or not binary enough. See below, and if you have questions, send them to me and I'll forward to the teachers so they can reply.

And we're very literary around here this month, with not one but TWO fabulous book launches: Simone Corday's Mitchell Bros. memoir on 1/19, and Stephen Elliott's new project, Sex for America, on 1/31. Not only that, Perverts Put Out is tomorrow! C'mon, a little rain doesn't scare you, does it? But do travel safely.

Saturday, 1/19, 8 pm -- SIMONE CORDAY BOOKPARTY: 9 1/2 Years Behind the Green Door -- A Mitchell Brothers memoir

Simone Corday's just-released, compulsively readable memoir will be available -- and celebrated! -- at this fun book event. With refreshments, a reading, and a special Green Door experience --

It's the 80's, just before the advent of AIDS, and we are behind the scenes at the entrancing Mitchell Brothers' O'Farrell Theater, which Gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson has declared to be "the Carnegie Hall of public sex in America." The theater and its steamy live shows are a countercultural venue for celebrities in entertainment and sports, and for San Francisco politicians and journalists. They are drawn by the beautiful strippers and the backroom hospitality of their outrageous porn king hosts, Artie and Jim Mitchell--who directed the groundbreaking porn film, Behind the Green Door, starring Marilyn Chambers.

Simone Corday, who danced at the O'Farrell and was a girlfriend of the late Artie Mitchell for nearly a decade, shares her unique story and her insights. She is the only woman insider to write about this insular but captivating world during this period, when she was close to the impulsive Mitchells, and a friend of the O'Farrell's honorary Night Manager, Hunter Thompson. Corday's unusual background -- she has an MA in English -- along with her honesty, irreverent sense of humor, and keen focus as an observer, make this a delicious expose.

Corday gives vivid accounts of three Mitchell Brothers' films she took part in, including the disastrous Behind the Green Door, the Sequel, a grandiose safe-sex epic with characters from Greek mythology, and their documentary on Hunter Thompson, titled The Crazy Never Die. She shares memories of her unconventional, passionate relationship with "Party Artie" Mitchell. His affectionate personal and domestic side, along with his love for his children, are remembered fondly. His taste for cocaine and advancing alcoholism--that led him to disappear on binges with a succession of young dancers--is also recaptured, as well as his volatile temper, his impish sense of fun, and his charismatic, macho persona.

Corday sheds light on Jim Mitchell's motives for shooting Art to death, and on the murder trial that follows. She reflects on her experience in the sex industry, and on her relationship with a notorious club owner. From the fun she had performing in the O'Farrell's spotlight as the theater's nemesis, then-San Francisco Mayor Dianne Feinstein, to her heartbreak visiting Artie's grave a few short years later, this is a sensational ride.

*Thursday, January 31, 8 pm -- SEX FOR AMERICA Bookparty

CSC celebrates local lit-scene star Stephen Elliott's newest, the anthology Sex for America: Politically Inspired Erotica. Publisher HarperCollins, which releases the book on January 29, says: "Sex for America takes us to the intersection of our desires and our political beliefs. These provocative stories by some of today's best writers, including Anthony Swofford, Jerry Stahl, Rick Moody, and Jonathan Ames, will inspire new discussions of sexual freedom and fascination. A surprising encounter between a lesbian and a young man shipping off to war, a liberal Hill staffer falling for the wife of a Republican senator, and Dick Cheney's duck hunt accident as jilted lover's revenge. See your government—and your most recent sex partners—as you've never seen them before."

CSC's bookparty for Sex for America includes readings from editor Elliott (author of Happy Baby and My Girlfriend Comes into the City and Beats Me Up) and some of the anthology's other local talent, which includes Michelle Tea, Charlie Anders, Daphne Gottlieb, and Michelle Richmond; Mariel a la Mode will do a singing burlesque, and olympic gold medalist Catharine Fox adds a circus peformance to the festivities.

$10.00 at the door; event commences at 8 pm.

*Friday, February 1, 7-10 pm: TRANSFORMATIVE TANTRA INTRODUCTORY EVENING

Transformative Tantra Introductory Evening
Friday, February 1, 2008
7 - 10 PM at the Center for Sex and Culture
$25 per person

Meet the authors Barbara Carrellas and Dossie Easton for an evening of chat and some experimental journeys in breath and consciousness. Get a taste of the weekend to come, satisfy your curiosity about Tantra and other energy-focused sexual paths, and discover how Tantra can help you unleash some unique abilities within yourself. Persons who have no experience in Tantra who intend to attend the full weekend are particularly encouraged to attend this evening, but all are welcome to join us for a taste of Tantra.

*Saturday and Sunday, February 2nd and 3rd, 2008, 10 AM to 5 PM -- TRANSFORMATIVE TANTRA: Transgressive, Transcendent, and Transgender
Center for Sex and Culture, San Francisco

Barbara Carrellas, author of Urban Tantra and Dossie Easton, co-author of Radical Ecstasy and The Ethical Slut, join forces to explode the myths and embrace the power of SM, gender journeying and Tantra.

If you are curious about the ecstatic possibilities of Tantra and other energy-focused sexual paths, but have felt too queer, too gender-queer, too kinky, too slutty, or too down-to-earth to feel comfortable in traditional Tantra groups, you'll love this weekend-facilitated by two women who have spent their entire adult lives exploring perverted paths to ecstasy. Persons of all genders and lovers of all stripes are welcome.

What is/are your gender(s)? Your partners' gender(s)? Do you really have to choose only one? We'll look at what gender is and what it isn't, and then find new ways to express it, pervert it and play with it. Next, we'll explore sexual energy as a physical force that you can activate, build, shape, and ride to amplify all your erotic encounters. We'll end our first day with a shared journey, as we intertwine our experience of masculine and feminine and both and neither into a big ecstatic circle of breath.

On Sunday, we'll explore the different elements and styles of energy-sharing and power exchange in sexual relationships. Using techniques from Tantra and BDSM, and the occasional bit of rope, we'll experiment with consciously polarizing and uniting opposites: active and receptive, masculine and feminine, power and helplessness. Is it true that the further apart we polarize our roles, the hotter the spark that bridges the gap? Let's find out!

All genders, sexual preferences and orientations are welcome.

To register or for more info contact mail@sexandculture.org or 415-255-1155. The full weekend workshop is available for $395 per person, early bird special of $360 if you reserve before January 15th. CSC can take Visa, MasterCArd and Discover.
